How to Help Your Baby Develop Fine Motor Skills Through Play
Your baby reaches determinedly towards a sensory prop, grabs it with their whole hand and immediately puts it in their mouth.
It might not look particularly sophisticated, especially when the prop then gets dropped, retrieved and dropped again. However, an extraordinary amount of development sits inside that small sequence.
Your baby has noticed an object, judged roughly where it is, moved their arm towards it, opened their hand, closed their fingers and brought it towards their body. Their eyes, brain, muscles and nervous system have all worked together—and that is before we even get to the investigation by mouth.
If you are wondering how to help your baby develop fine motor skills, the answer is reassuringly simple. Babies need plenty of safe opportunities to reach, grasp, hold, squeeze, transfer, poke, pull and explore.
They do not need to perform these actions perfectly. The slightly chaotic attempts are where the learning happens.

What are fine motor skills in babies?
Fine motor skills involve the controlled movements of smaller muscles, particularly those in the hands, fingers, wrists, eyes and mouth.
In the early months, your baby may swipe towards an object or curl their fingers around something placed in their palm. Gradually, those broad movements become more deliberate. Babies begin to reach accurately, hold objects, move them between their hands and use individual fingers with increasing control.
Eventually, many babies develop a pincer grip, using the thumb and forefinger to pick up something small. Anyone who has watched a baby locate a microscopic crumb on a freshly vacuumed floor will know how effective this grip can become.
These abilities might begin with a crinkly scarf or the corner of a board book, but they lead somewhere important.
Fine motor control later helps children feed themselves, hold a cup, turn pages, build with blocks, brush their teeth and begin dressing independently. Over time, the same foundations support drawing, using scissors and writing.
The Department for Education’s early years guidance on fine motor skills explains that these movements contribute to independence across every area of learning. Fine motor development is not just about preparing a child to hold a pencil years from now. It helps them participate in their own life.

Fine motor skills do not develop in isolation
The word “fine” can make us picture tiny finger movements, but the rest of the body plays a surprisingly large role.
Before a baby can control their hands accurately, they need stability through their body, shoulders and arms. Tummy time, rolling, reaching across the body and pushing up from the floor all help to build this foundation.
Think about trying to thread a needle while sitting on a wobbling chair. Precise hand movements become much harder when the body underneath them feels unstable.
For babies, gross and fine motor development constantly work together. Reaching from tummy time strengthens the shoulders while encouraging hand-eye coordination. Sitting and leaning towards a toy involves balance, core strength and judgement as well as grasping.
Even crawling contributes to the story. Weight-bearing through the hands can build strength around the wrists and shoulders, while moving opposite sides of the body supports coordination.
Every baby develops differently, and some babies find their own route through the movement stages. Motor development is not a race or a test that parents need to revise for.

How sensory play develops fine motor skills
Babies learn about movement by moving. Watching an adult demonstrate something can capture their attention, but their brain needs the physical experience of trying it too.
Sensory play creates a powerful reason to make that attempt.
A shiny object encourages a baby to reach. An interesting texture makes them want to hold on, while a sound invites them to shake. Something squashy can be squeezed; a floating scarf rewards the effort of grabbing and pulling.
Each action gives the brain useful information. Your baby learns how much pressure to apply, how objects feel, whether they are heavy or light and what happens when they move them.
This is one reason we avoid expecting babies to use toys “properly” in our classes. Mouthing, banging, waving and dropping are all meaningful forms of investigation.
Repetition matters too. When your baby drops something for the seventeenth time, they are not plotting your downfall—even if it feels personal. They are refining the release of their fingers, exploring cause and effect and checking whether the result remains satisfyingly predictable.

As control develops, babies begin to lift flaps, point to pictures and help turn pages. Their eyes follow an illustration while their hand moves towards it, bringing visual attention and physical coordination together.
Those early experiences support the journey towards intentional mark-making. A baby who swirls their fingers through a sensory tray is beginning to learn that movement can create a result. Much later, that understanding becomes drawing and writing.
A love of books and the physical confidence to explore them can grow together.

Should I practise fine motor skills at home?
You do not need to turn your home into a miniature occupational therapy department.
Everyday life already contains opportunities. Let your baby hold the spoon during a meal, grasp a clean flannel at bath time or explore the pages of a sturdy book. Offer safe objects with different textures and shapes, then allow enough time for experimentation.
The important word is “allow”. Adults are efficient, so we often complete an action before a baby has had time to attempt it. Waiting for a few extra seconds can give your baby the chance to reach, adjust their hand and try again.
Keep all objects age-appropriate, supervise sensory play closely and avoid anything small enough to become a choking risk. Babies will often explore with their mouths, so every resource must be safe for their stage.
